Bottles to Beads–Bringing New Lives to Kenyan Women

Every month we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper!  A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose — and even longer if it’s in the landfill.

Fair Trade Designs hopes to counter this waste in a small way by carrying beautiful jewelry made from thousands of discarded bottles. Talented Kenyan artisans clean the bottles and melt them in a furnace, then spin the liquid into beads on a metal rod.

Blending the beads with silver accents, the workers string them into contemporary, elegant jewelry like our Silver Moon Recycled Glass necklace.  Its striking cobalt blue color makes it a standout on any woman.

This one-of-a kind piece was made in Nairobi in a safe and comfortable workshop. In keeping with fair trade practices, each employee is paid a very fair monthly salary in addition to receiving between 5% and 15% of the wholesale price of each item they make. This way, they receive both a regular monthly salary and income throughout the month. Because of this, the workers earn 5 times more in wages than the national average in Kenya. Most medical costs for the workers and their families are also covered and they are provided a daily lunch.
